(Extract from Tsun Wan Yat Po, Hongkong, 20th Sept. 1926).

Reply of Tseung Kai Shak to Sun Chun Fong of Kiangsu, Demands withdrawal of the troops of the 5 Provinces.

As already reported in our previous issue, Sun Chun Fong has on repeated occasions censured Tseung Kai Shek for invading Hu-nan and Kiangai. Now we leam that Tseung has sent a further letter to Sun Chum Fong, declaring that he has no intention of attacking Kiangai, and requesting Sun to withdraw his troops to their base immediately so that each side may go about its own business. Failing this, he will not hesitate to begin military operations. This reply was published before the telegram of Sun Chun Fong of the 7th and its text is as follows:-

My school-mate, Sun Hing Yuen at Nan King, "I have the honour to acknowledge receipt of your latter and to thank you for your kind regards. Your declaration that you will maintain the peace of your 5 Provinces shows that you have no intention of helping one side against another. But as enquiries show, your words have not been borne out by your actions. Why have you been so inconsistent? Do you

want to meet me in the field? Governor (Wo) Pok

and I have resolved not to invade Kiangai. But

your men are making every endeavour to influence you, and you may be mialed and drawn into the whirlpool of war and bring destruction upon the people of the 5 Provinces. Your duty and intention is to safeguard your territories and to protect your people; and you have no wish to see the blood
